A hybrid caravan is a shorter, lighter off-road van that combines caravan comforts with camper trailer toughness. A full caravan gives you more length, more water, and more power, but it weighs more. At Bluewater, whether you call it a hybrid caravan, hybrid camper, or hybrid camper trailer, it is the same solid Bluewater build. So the real choice comes down to where you want to take it and what you are towing with.
Here is what actually changes between a hybrid caravan and a full caravan once you leave the powered sites behind.
What is the actual difference between a hybrid caravan and a full caravan?
The difference between a hybrid caravan and a full caravan comes down to size, weight, and carrying capacity, not build quality.
In the Bluewater range, the 16ft hybrid caravans (Xterrain, Dargo HR, Xpedition Plus, and Xcursion) measure 6.8m to 7m overall and have a tare from 2,480kg. The 19ft full caravans (Ranger, Illawarra, and Bushmaster) measure 7.6m to 7.8m overall, have a tare from 2,780kg and carry a 3,500kg ATM.
A hybrid keeps some camper trailer traits. It has a shorter body that is easier to back into a tight bush site, and on some models the bed folds out from the body (the Dargo HR is a rear fold, while the Xpedition Plus is a side fold).
A lot stays the same across both a hybrid caravan and a full caravan. Every model has a fully welded aluminium body, a galvanised chassis and drawbar, a Cruisemaster DO35 hitch, Redarc battery management, and an internal ensuite with a Thetford toilet and shower. Every model also comes with a lifetime chassis and drawbar warranty. Each one gets many hours of in-house fit-out in WA, and no critical systems are installed offshore.
What do you gain or lose going off-grid in a hybrid?
Going off-grid in a hybrid gives you easier towing and tighter access, while a full caravan gives you greater water capacity, power storage, and fridge space.
Here is how the standard specs compare:
- Power: The 16ft hybrids come with 608Ah of lithium (upgradable to 912Ah), 600W of roof solar, and a 2,000W inverter. The 19ft caravans run 900Ah of lithium, 1,050W of solar, and a 3,000W inverter.
- Water: The 16ft hybrids carry 200L of fresh water. The 19ft caravans carry 240L of fresh water plus a 120L grey tank.
- Fridge: The Xterrain, Dargo HR, and Xcursion have a 96L upright fridge with a 20L freezer. All three 19ft models have a 185L upright fridge freezer.
- Suspension: The 16ft hybrids use heavy-duty coil springs with adjustable independent suspension and Lovells shocks (with the option of Cruisemaster ATX coil tandem suspension). The 19ft caravans use Cruisemaster ATX coil tandem suspension.
- Towing: The 16ft hybrids have an ATM of 3,000kg to 3,200kg. The 19ft caravans have an ATM of 3,500kg.
In practice, the extra water and battery on a 19ft buy you more days between refills. That counts if you are a couple planning long stretches between towns on the Gibb River Road or through the Pilbara. The hybrid’s shorter length and lighter weight count on soft sand into beach camps around Esperance and Cape Range, on steep tracks, and when you are squeezing into a small site.
Towing margin matters too. A 3,500kg ATM sits right at the braked towing limit of most dual-cab utes and large 4WD wagons, so a fully loaded 19ft leaves you very little headroom. A hybrid at 3,000kg gives you more room to move. Check your own vehicle’s towing capacity, GVM, and GCM before you decide.

So which one should you choose?
You should choose a hybrid caravan if off-road access and towing margin matter most, or a 19ft full caravan if staying off-grid for long stretches with maximum capacity is your priority.
If you are a family heading for sandy coastal camps on school holidays, a 16ft Xterrain or Dargo HR family layout keeps the weight down and still sleeps four with an ensuite. If you are a couple planning months on the road with long gaps between fuel stops, the extra water, battery, and fridge space in a Ranger or Bushmaster will earn its keep.
